marilyn had been so busy that day, she got back from france the day before and she poor girl had to catch up on everything. she was running errands, grocery shopping, and calling all of her friends that she had forgotten to tell she was leaving the country. one person had called and she hadn't called back was zane. she forgot that she was supposed to see him for weeks now, and she had left the country and totally forgot about the meeting. she knew he had a daughter who was what? three or four? marilyn had seen pictures of the little girl, and she had been with zane for a while now and marilyn was practically raising the little munchkin. marilyn bought the girl clothes, and she had started teaching her how to put on makeup already, which zane had yelled at her about. oh zane, how marilyn still loved the boy. but he was her friend, and although it was like he was more there was nothing official about them at all. marilyn loved to go to his house and feel like she was playing house. little remi running around the floors, and the girl never disobeyed marilyn, she was so adorable. she would do anything marilyn told her to do, it was like marilyn was her mother, it was so weird for her to think about. mare would always be greeted with running and hugging her then kisses all over her face. marilyn spoiled the girl like mad, bringing her candy and dresses everytime she was stop in. that's what i forgot! mare thought as she was driving towards zane's house. she made a u-turn in a 'no u-turn' stop light and made her way back to her house. she had bought remi a hand sewn dress from france by a local tailor who specialized in making children's ornate clothing. it looked like a sun dress and had sequins all over it. it was gorgeous. her mother already had it hanging on the banister when mare pulled up the the house. "thanks mom!" she shouted through the house, see her mother and her didn't get along much, but her mother knew everything about marilyn and she knew everything before it even happened. so, finally pulling up to zane's house she got out of the car, grabbing her bag with clothing in it for probably four days she walked towards the house. she never knew if she was going to stay for one night or four nights, so she always packed extra. marilyn knocked on the door and opened it, tossing her bag to the side in the foyer and yelling into the house, "i'm here!" and instant grin being plastered on her face as she waited for remi, and of course zane to come for her. she pulled out the hoodie that was in her bag and put it on quick, wondering if zane would remember that she had stolen his hoodie from him.

it was hard, raising a kid on your own. not that zane was ever really actually alone. he had jagger and jason and cain and kendall and everyone that came with the clan. and most of all he had mickey, mick who had probably done more for him and remedy than he could ever begin to thank him for. and he loved him for it, loved him more than he probably should given how mickey as a human being was, but it was because mickey was the way that he was that zane had to welcome someone when they gave him a little bit more. because he loved mickey. but mick couldn't ever in a thousand years love him enough to stop being...well, mickey. and it sucked, and it hurt, and it was something that no one could ever really hope to fill. but he couldn't blame them for trying. so when he met marilyn, it was so easy to just...adopt her into his little family.
which is precisely what he had done. because everyone was great, they really were, but none of them were able to fill that empty gap. no one was able to fill in the space that ella once used to occupy and though he would love, love to have his best friend there to fill the void, mickey could only give him so much because the rest he was off giving to everyone else in the world. and he didn't need that. he needed someone who was going to stay and act like they cared and be there when he woke up in the morning. someone who was good with rem, hell, good with him. someone he could cuddle with on the couch and still expect to see in the morning laying next to him. all the stuff that mickey couldn't - no, all the things mickey wouldn't - give to him if he dared to let his best friend know his feelings. marilyn gave him that. she gave him something to grasp onto, something tangible. and maybe it wasn't something official but it was enough to fill the one space that mick refused to occupy in his life.
so he let her stay with him. and he let her play mom to rem. and he let her do all the things that he knew a girlfriend or boyfriend would do if they were with him, and he had no qualms about any of it. he liked marilyn. he thought she was beautiful and funny and sweet and rem absolutely loved her. maybe she lacked the spark that drew him to his friend, but she made up for it in insatiable kindness and maybe it wasn't what he needed but it was definitely what his daughter needed. so he asked her to come stay with them for a little while again. just a few days if she wanted. he knew mick wasn't going to be happy and jagger would probably bitch at him for lord knows what reason. but he didn't care.
he was in the kitchen with rem when mare arrived, just taking some cookies out of the oven (remedy had insisted they make peanut butter cookies because peanut butter cookies were the best kind and marilyn was the best) when he heard her voice. he smiled and rem immediately sped out of the room to welcome her with a hug and an enthusiastic, "maryyy-linn!" he pulled off the oven mitts he'd been wearing and placed them on the counter before walking out into the front room to join his daughter and his friend, greeting marilyn with a quick peck on the lips and a happy, "hello there, beautiful," laced with affection. with a smile, he ran a hand down her side, feeling the fabric of a hoodie that was far too familiar. maybe marilyn wasn't anyone else in the clan. but damn, sometimes it was just stuff like this that made her enough. "whadduya got there?"

marilyn had never known what it felt like to want anything... she was given everything she ever wanted and needed in the blink of an eye. her father was at the prime of his business making when she was very young, and his wealth and his empire, practically, has been growing ever since. she never really had to worry about anything, and she was such a spoiled child she always wondered how she grew up to actually be well rounded. the girl was so bad her mother had to hire three nannies in one month just to help her with the child. marilyn had watched videos of herself ripping up the house, yes her mother set up the cameras so when marilyn was older she could see herself be so badly behaved.
marilyn grew up a lot from then, and those temper tantrums she had when she was so young grew into her learning how to sneak under the radar. marilyn ended up with Jonas when she was very young, she was new at relationships, and she gave him everything. there wasn't anyone who could take his place, and still there wasn't anyone who could. he had this life to him that no one could share with her. he shined his light on her and she just glowed day in and day out, until they broke up and she went to europe for college after a few more relationships. marilyn graduated college and came back home, she had known zane from before then, when she was in between jonas and college, he was there. marilyn had fallen into zane's life, and his loving arms. they were inseparable for forever, and then she left for college. it was one of the hardest things to do, to leave both of her loves behind. the one that she was never going to get over, and still loved, and the one that she was with and didn't want to leave.
they were so different. marilyn was immensely rich, and zane was just normal. marilyn wasn't apart of zane's 'clan', and she was never really invited into it, which for the longest time really hurt her, but damn, she was happy with zane. he was the reason she would wake up, and the reason that she would get out of her bed. she had nothing else to do, and she was in many classes for photography, so sometimes she would whip out the camera, but she was still getting into it by the time she was with zane. besides she had graduated by then and had nothing to do anyways. zane showed her a more vivid side of life, not just dinner parties and elegant ball gowns.
'maryyyyy-linnnn!' marilyn heard from the kitchen as she bent down and scooped remi into her arms. "there is my pwitty pwitty pwincess!" marilyn met fore head to forehead with the blonde girl. the opposites continued with the girl and marilyn, continuing the opposites of zane and mare. the blonde hair compared with the black hair, the pale skin compared with the dark tone of mare's. it was great, marilyn was happy to have this little girl holding her around her neck and be so different then her, she realized from this that it didn't matter what you looked like, love is love is love... cliche, but it is the truth.
marilyn looked from the eyes of the girl and met with zane's. "there is my man..." she smiled and kissed him back lightly. looking at remi and blushing. she always blushed since remi was in her arms and apparently saw everything. that is the thing with little children, they see everything. no matter how hard adults try to hide things, they it never gets past the little innocent eyes of kids.
so, putting remi down, allowing her to run around, she felt zane's hand run down her side which just in one touch showed his love and appreciation. that was the thing, everything between the two was laced with love and affection. they both appreciated each other, marilyn loved and appreciated zane for protecting her, and caring for her. there were plenty of incidents when they would go out that marilyn could have gotten hurt, or worse... but zane was there, and always had his loving arms around her keeping her safe.
as remi wasn't in her arms she leaned back against the wall, looking up at zane who was just tall enough to cause her to have to tilt her head upwards to face him. "nothing... just this comfortable hoodie that is yours, but i don't want to take it off to give to you." she said with a grin and took her hands from the hoodie pocket and put them onto his shoulders. getting onto her tippy toes she kissed him, allowing her arms to snake around and hold her close. this was one of those moments she was waiting for since even before she left for france... she wanted to kiss him so badly when she was gone, and even though they weren't together they really were, in a way.
zane was one of her best friends, and he was her closest of her best friends that she had. he was her everything, and of course remi was included in that. marilyn had been making really bad friends over in europe since they got her into popping pills. which she hadn't taken any. but anyways they had all found out about her owning all those hotels in the countries over there, and they all used her for the jets and the money. and when she came back from college she swore not to go back, and zane filled in that empty love spot and her old friends came back into her life.
thinking of her pills, when she pulled away marilyn shook her head and grabbed her bag, "uh... i'll be right back..." she felt naustious and she ran into the bathroom, opening the pill containers and taking seven xanax, or something like that and shoving the pill bottle to the bottom of her purse. feeling so guilty for taking them, and sitting there freaking out, believing that zane would walk in and see her and suddenly as if something hit the switch, she calmed, and she took in a deep breath. she smiled to herself and walked from the bathroom, after flsuhing the toilet so it at least seemed like she went pee. tossing her bag on his bed she walked back to the living room, plopping onto the sofa.

zane smiled into her second kiss, arms moving to wrap around her waist now that rem wasn't there to block them. this was nice. this was exactly why he loved having marilyn around so much. because she was great, she was fantastic, and sweet and when he had been with her, he had been entirely happy. and though he had since realized that he could never love anyone the proper way anymore, since he'd realized how ruined he'd been by the revelation of how much affection he'd grown to acquire for his best friend, marilyn was nice to have around because she didn't desire commitment. she didn't ask to hold him down, and as adversely opposite as that was for him, she gave him everything he needed. affection, kindness, a mother figure for his daughter, and a vessel for affections that he couldn't shower on the one person he really wanted to. and she didn't even ask anything of him in return except that he be kind, and with a girl like her, how could he not?
and it was sweet, the way that rem loved her. it was. there couldn't be two more different looking girls in the world (though, as he reminded himself, remedy's mother was vastly different in comparison to mare) but she took to her like a moth to a flame. the way she had pressed their foreheads together and the enthusiastic way she'd responded to his daughter's affections was enough to melt his god damn heart. it was always one of his favorite things about the person, the way they interacted with remedy. some of them weren't really sure how to take her, seeing as she was this beautiful little blonde angel and zane himself was dark-haired, tattooed, and a hardass for three-fourths of his day. they always seemed to look at him a little confused when he went places with remedy, as if they weren't sure how somebody who looked like him could possibly contribute to making somebody who looked like her.
but he loved his little girl and anyone who watched them together for more than five seconds could see that. he was so protective of her it was almost stupid, and he made an effort to keep down not only his bad habits but his friends' bad habits as well. no one was allowed to be drunk or high or angry in front of remedy. no one was allowed to swear in front of her. no one could make sexual innuendos unless they were whispered so that she couldn't hear. he tried to surround her with love; he knew it made people uncomfortable sometimes but he wasn't afraid to kiss people in front of her, no matter who it was. not marilyn, not any exes of either gender...shit, he'd given kendall and james friendly kisses in succession just to say hi in front of rem and it never phased her. he wanted to give her an open, loving, but safe environment and he'd be damned if anyone tried to tell him that he wasn't doing such a great job at it. because he was a good father. he knew he was.
"i thought that hoodie looked familiar," he laughed as she pulled away from him and he nodded and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before letting her scurry off to the bathroom. he didn't know how long it'd been since she'd been home and honestly, he wasn't going to keep her from the bathroom. so he didn't bother her, instead following the sound of his daughter's voice (she was singing quietly, just a few "la la la"s that had no particular tune or rhythm) back to the kitchen, where he found her sitting on the ground eating peanut butter. he laughed quietly to himself. "whatcha doing there, boo?" he asked her, bending down to take the peanut butter away from her. she pouted. "i couldn't get the cookies." which just brought a wider grin to his face as he grabbed a few of the mostly cooled cookies from the stove and handed them down to her. "don't tell mare," he laughed. "just finish these and come back out to the living room, okay?"
she nodded and stuck one of the cookies in her mouth, smiling up at him happily with her cheeks slightly bulged from the sugar treat, and he smiled and ruffled her hair. "atta girl, kiddo." then the sound of the toilet flushing distracted him, and he looked up as he realized that meant mare would be out soon. good. he'd honestly missed having her around, even if it was just in the way that a friend missed another good friend when they were absent on a particularly boring school day. he gave his daughter one final kiss on the forehead before making his way back into the living room, smiling when he saw marilyn on the couch. he took a seat beside her, putting his arm up on the back of the couch behind her shoulder and leaning in to give her another quick kiss to the cheek. "all settled in?" he asked quietly in her ear, not pulling away. deny it as he did, zane was still a man. he still missed physical affection sometimes.

marilyn grinned over at zane as he walked into the living room and came to her. rem was content and playing and as she pretended not to notice zane walking towards her she couldn't help but smile and look up at him, "oh hey there..." she said. then he was next to her and she was in his arms once again. his lips came near her ear and she got a cold chill that she hid, though she wanted to shake from it.
[b'"yeah, i'm all set..."
[/b] she breathed out in a small breath and let her eyes roam to meet his. she kissed him and giggled against his lips. the giggle showing how happy she was, and how comfortable she was near him. mare pulled her lips away just a centimeter, then putting her head on his she buried her face into his shirt, and curled into a ball on his lap. "grrrrrr" she giggled. mare smiled contently, and looked up at remi who was near and she smiled at the little girl. giving her a wink and then playing like a small peek a boo game she sat back up and leaned against the arm of the sofa, looking at zane. "so i missed you while i was in france, you know?" she said and then remembered the dress, but stayed put so she could speak to him a bit about some serious stuff. her kiss, her touch...it was enough to get him to forget for a moment about everything that was weighing on his mind. all the appointments he had, all the budgeting he had to do, bills to pay, mickey...just everything that was always on his mind was easy to forget with her there. she was like a breath of fresh air, a moment of temporary relaxation that he didn't really know he needed until she was there. she just made life easier and he couldn't thank her enough for it. she was everything he didn't know was nice to have until she was there, and though it wasn't enough to permanently wipe all his troubles from his mind, it was enough for temporary relief and that was what mattered. he smiled into her kiss and placed small kisses around her cheeks and the corners of her mouth before pulling away.
he still wrapped his arms around her, though, keeping her there close to him. she was so cute, she really was, and it was nice to have someone there. or at least someone who was okay with letting him know he was there. because he knew mick was there with him sometimes at night, curled up next to him when he thought he was sleeping, whispering things he thought he couldn't hear. the sweetest god damn things in the world that he wished he'd say when he was awake. because that was what he needed. he needed to hear mickey's words and know that he was meant to hear them and feel his body and know he was meant to feel it. but he was always gone by morning, back to the room he stayed in or up at ungodly hours with remedy, doing whatever the pair did when he slept in.
and he liked to tell himself that maybe that was enough for him, the little affection he was able to draw out of mickey wilson. but he knew it wasn't and it was with moments like this that marilyn that it became really apparent. he missed feeling someone in his arms and holding them close and having them bury their face in his shirt and everything that came with...cuddling. he was so deprived from it that having it was just so extraordinarily pleasant. "i missed you, too," he smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead, before pressing his forehead against hers and kissing her lips lightly. "and rem, too, though she's a little occupied by cookies to say it, i think." he looked over at his daughter who just smiled that adorable mischievous smile that she had to have picked up from mickey at him. "i mean we've kept ourselves occupied, but we always miss our marilyn when she's gone."

marilyn liked to love, well no, she loved to love. and to show zane that she was at least there for him, someone to pour love on and she would give it back. there was always that little voice in the back of her head hinting to how Jonas used to be for her. jonas was the one, he was her man, but he wasn't there for a while and she was lost. zane was just a comfort zone, someone who was there when she needed him and she was there for him when he needed her. she knew that there was someone else for him, she knew that she wasn't his everything, and she had told him about jonas, and it was apparent that she missed him.
as she sat there, curled in zane's arms she smelled him, "you smell good, babe." she loved calling him babe, she loved calling any guy she was with, babe. it was like she really cared at that moment of what she said, and yes, she really cared about zane, and little remi. marilyn wiggled out of the hold zane had on her and she jumped up, "awweh, remi you missed your mare!?" mare grinned and picked remi up, tossing her in the air and as she came down she pulled the little blonde into a hug. "well, i'm not going anywhere, lovebug." marilyn smiled and looked over at zane with a wink.
"in fact, i have something for you!" marilyn lightly put remi on the couch and walked down the hall to zane's bedroom and grabbed the dress. she walked back out, holding it out and smiled, "here you go, princess, it's a dress made just for you..." marilyn said and sat down on the other side of remi so remi was between the two of them. "so, no other little girl has this same dress, only you." marilyn said, looking at remi and smiling.
marilyn loved the little girl, all the times she would wake up with remi just staring at her. or she would end up in bed with zane and marilyn. the blonde beauty would grow up to be a damn bombshell, and marilyn knew she would break hearts just by walking down the street. marilyn looked up at zane and smiled, "i saw the outline of the dress, and paid for the custom bead work and the ruffles and such to get done." she smiled, leaning down to kiss remi's cheek, then leaning forward to peck zane's lips lightly.
marilyn's phone started to ring in the other room, and she hopped up, walking out and looking at the message from one of her friends. she came back and winked at zane, then walked at him letting her arms wiggle under hers as she made her way back onto his lap with a contented sigh. "i like you... i think i'll keep yah." she closed her eyes slightly, all the traveling taking its toll on her slightly.

he smiled tightly when marilyn left his side to go and interact with his daughter. it was always hard for him, to see someone interacting with his daughter who normally wouldn't be there. he wanted more than anything for it to be elaine - ella, who was the girl's mother even as he so adamantly denied it now. she came around still. once or twice a week and each time remedy would call her mommy and his jaw would set because it wasn't fair that el should get such a prestigious title when she saw her daughter for four hours every week. he wanted her to stick around. he wanted her to one day just look over at him and remember why they had been in love and maybe stick around for a while and while he knew it wasn't going to happen and he knew that mick would definitely never let it happen, it was nice to think about. and it never got easier, seeing another woman interact with remedy.
because usually it was just kendall. kendall and more recently barbra as she got to hanging around more and del though he had some qualms about letting either of them around her sometimes. and other than them, mickey was the one who really got remedy squealing and laughing, the only one he'd really trust to take care of his baby girl if anything were to happen to him. because mick had been there since her conception, watching out for her in the womb and making sure ella stayed healthy and didn't do anything stupid. and there he'd been ever since. where he always was - right by zane's side. to see anyone else act so domestically with remedy almost felt like a betrayal to mickey, who had given up so much to spend time with this little girl. but he couldn't think about mickey. the whole idea behind having mare around was to get his mind off of what he felt toward mickey.
he put a hand on remedy's back when she was set on the couch next to him, and she leaned into him as mare scurried away again. when she returned, he didn't have to look at remedy to see the look on her face. he wasn't going to lie and say that remedy was one of those little girls who wanted to grow up to be a disney princess. she was raised by two men - and though kendall and del added a little female influence, kendall and del weren't exactly the best people to teach a little girl how to act like a little girl. she sat down and had tea parties with him and mick sometimes, but they didn't play princess games. but no girl could resist a pretty dress and remedy had held a fascination with the cinderella-esque dresses with the wide skirts for ages. he knew without looking at her that she was ecstatic.
she pulled the dress into her and zane smiled, holding up the bodice while she ran her hands up and down the skirt happily. "thanks, mary-linn," she said happily and zane let go of the bodice as she hugged the dress to her body. "so pretty! daddy, can i put it on?" he laughed and looked up as mare left the room to check her phone and then turned his attention back to his daughter. "not right now, remi," he said, "because i don't want you getting cookie crumbs on it. go put it on your bed, though, we'll try it on before bed." she scurried off to do just that as marilyn came back into the room and he wrapped his arms instinctively around her as she plopped down onto his lap. he smiled at her though it was a little strained with her words. he wanted to be kept. maybe not by her but the idea of it was nice. he just wished he could hear the words from someone else. someone tattooed. someone male. someone named mickey.
but he was saved from answering by planting a kiss on her lips that was interrupted by remedy walking in and loudly announcing, "mary-linn, you're my mommy," which made him pull away and give her an incredulous look. what?
