[atrb=width,240] The stress was too much. Which was weird, because Athena had always worked well under stress; she and Addy had been opposites in those ways. Athena was the smart one, the girl who had been nerdy in middle school, but was lucky enough to have snagged a popular girl for a best friend in kindergarten. Addy was the popular one, even though she wasn’t the nicest girl around. What people didn’t know was that Addy was every bit as smart as Athena. The girls were going to be roommates at Yale, after all. But Addy hid it behind her cheerleader, queen of high school façade. Anyway, Addy had always broken under stress; freaked out, had a meltdown, gone to Athena for help. Athena was the strong one, with the level headed thinking and the time management skills to not let everything pile up at once. But Yale was more than she had anticipated. Thea knew it would be challenging, obviously, but she just couldn’t have expected so many speed bumps. The PTSD, for one. The nightmares meant she got no sleep, had developed a nasty caffeine addiction, and was beyond tired in all of her classes. And with a few weeks left in the semester, she realized that she really needed to kick it into gear. But not today. Today, Athena had to take a break. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon, and she just couldn’t fathom spending it in studying. Besides, she’d worked so hard that she’d practically been living in the library for the past week and a half. Today, she’d go out. Out where, exactly, Athena didn’t know. She woke up that morning and showered, dressing in a pair of jean shorts, a lace top, a pair of sandals, and an oversized off white shirt. Letting her dark hair fall in waves down her back, Athena headed out of the dorm and walked until she was out of the grasps of Yale. The downside of her plan was that she didn’t have a car here… so walking it was. But, as previously mentioned, it was a gorgeous day out, so the brunette didn’t mind too much. Days like this made her miss Addy and Kyle more than anything. The three of them and Mitch, Addy’s boyfriend, would skip class and drive to the coast; ah, the beauty of being a senior in high school. It didn’t seem fair that her best friend and boyfriend were gone, and she was left here, having to continue on with her life as though nothing had happened. That’s really what people expected. They wanted you to mourn for the first few months, but now that it was almost a year since the shooting? Well why haven’t you moved on yet? And why hadn’t she? It wasn’t like Athena wanted to carry their ghosts around with her; it was torture. But she just couldn’t let them go. Soon, Athena came upon a music store and decided to go in. She smiled slightly at the tired look guy working the counter, who nodded his head in response, and moved through the store, not looking for anything in particular. | [atrb=width,100] |
