I KNEW THE PATHWAY LIKE THE BACK OF MY HAND. I FELT THE EARTH BENEATH MY FEET. SAT BY THE RIVER AND IT MADE ME COMPLETE. OH, SIMPLE THING, WHERE HAVE YOU GONE? I'M GETTING OLD AND I NEED SOMETHING TO RELY ON. SO TELL ME WHEN YOU'RE GONNA LET ME IN. I'M GETTING TIRED AND I NEED SOMEWHERE |
to begin,
Celia knew that she should’ve been home two hours prior to when she was walking into that apartment building. Her curfew set for her by her older brother had been midnight since the time that she had turned seventeen. Now at the age of eighteen she couldn’t help but feel how a curfew was a bit null and void. She was legally an adult, she could buy cigarettes –not that she smokes- or lottery tickets – not that she saw much in gambling- but more than anything else she felt that she should’ve been allowed to stay out as late as she liked.
It wasn’t that she didn’t respect her older brother, because, really she respected him more than she did the majority of the adults in her life. More than the teachers that she had well and left behind when she decided to stop going to school, more than her parents that had never wanted much of anything to do with her. Most of the time, really, when Gabe asked her to do something she did it without argument. Save an easy shrug of her shoulders and then agreed to whatever the older man asked of her. Though, as of recently she couldn’t help but feel that rebellious streak taking her over again. The need to press some buttons was talking her over and she never had been the sort to not give into it.
Hence her not making her way home until hours later than she was supposed to be there, on as far as Gabe knew, was a school night. She hadn’t answered her phone when he had called, and it wasn’t right. She knew that she would end up feeling a bit terrible for making him worry. Part of her wanted it though, to have him worry about her. It wasn’t that he didn’t give the younger girl attention, that he didn’t spend time with her or anything like that. He was a good big brother when it well and came down to it. It could’ve simply been that she wanted more attention than she needed due to the lack of attention she’d gotten when she was younger.
A smug kind of smile rested on her lips as she walked to the entrance to her home, her guitar slung over her shoulder and her satchel resting on the opposite hip. She wasn’t sure what she was hoping for when opening the door. Maybe for Gabe to be on the other side sitting in his chair waiting for her to show up with more than a little worry in his features. Or maybe she wanted a bit of a pissed off look on his features, ready to put his foot down with her in the way that her own father hadn’t ever bothered.
Her antics might make it seem like she didn’t care for the man, but really, she did. He was her best friend. She loved him. With all of her heart she loved the man that she called her older brother. Sometimes, though, maybe due to some deep seeded insecurities that were well and set in the girl’s core, she just needed to be reminded how much he cared. Reminded that she mattered to that brother of hers, if she didn’t matter to anyone else.
A turn of key in the lock and then hanging them on the key hook, and she made her way into the apartment, dark eyes searching for Gabe.
