Spencer and Rosie had been talking to each other for a good while now, they're spent a bit of time together since their last date either at his place or hers just hanging out but this was their second official date, maybe even first considering the word 'date' wasn't mentioned when they had first met up. All of this aside, Spence could feel himself starting to really like the girl, it wasn't hard to see why, she was adorable, sweet, funny, intelligent, beautiful and most shockingly, she seemed like like him just as much even if he was blind to it. See, Mr. Haynes was used to being liked by women, just never in the way he wanted to, he had become very accustomed to being friend zoned within a matter of hours of knowing him. Not that he ever complained, and the fact it happened with pretty much every girl he ever met made him more than accepting of it, he may never have come out with a girlfriend but he had too many friends to count on both his hands and toes, how could he really complain about that? But something was different with Rosie, even if he couldn't see it, even if he was just expecting what happened every time to happen with them it hadn't yet and it must have been a record for him. They had been speaking for a good few weeks and she hadn't seemed to have lost interest or pushed him into being 'just friends'.
As Spencer checked his reflection in the mirror hung in his hall way for a last time he couldn't help but notice the knot in his stomach. He'd lost count of how many times he had fluffed up his hair and flattened it again, no matter what he did, it continued to look even worse than usual. In the end he had given up and let it do what it wanted cause it seemed it was refusing to do what he wanted it to. Clothing hadn't been much of an issue since everything he had was pretty much the same, his wardrobe contained a mixture of graphic tee with geeky and funny slogans on and then there were his work shirts. He had no fashion sense at all and had made peace with that fact way before he even graduated high school. He dressed how he acted, quirky and geekish and it worked for him, for the most part. With his hair given up on, his wallet, phone and keys shoved into his pockets and his feet slipped into his converse, he was ready to go. He stood at the elevator pushing the button impatiently as he always did when he waited for it. Had he not been on the top floor of his building he probably would have just taken the stairs every day. elevator taken and his feet now on the ground floor he headed to his car, not what you might expect him to have, an 1967 Chevrolet impala, a car he had grown up working on with his dad and had been given to him when he graduated high school. It defiantly upped his cool a little bit. He pulled up in front of Rosie's and sent her a simple text saying:
"I'm here " and sat and waited for her to come down and hop into the passenger side.

Rosie was the perfect mixture of nervous and excited. Spencer was taking her out, although she wasn’t sure where, and from the moment she woke up, Rosie was ready to go. Unfortunately, she had a few hours of work to do before he came to pick her up. She hopped out of bed, dancing and humming through the apartment, Sammy following her from room to room as she got ready for the day. After taking a quick shower, she threw on an oversized shirt that she’d stolen from her brother and a pair of terry cloth shorts. Planning on getting some sketches done, Rosie headed to the small office in the back of the apartment. She sat in her roll-y chair and spun around, looking up at the ceiling. She always had a hard time getting into her work, but once she did, Rosie could stay cooped up in her apartment for days, living off of whatever groceries she had in the kitchen. Sammy sat looking up at her, whining every so often. ”I know boy,” she said, reaching down to scratch behind his ears. ”I’d rather go on a walk too.” After a good hour or so of procrastination, Rosie finally got to work, starting on a sketch for her portfolio.
After she’d gotten a decent amount of work done, Rosie rewarded herself by getting ready for her date. ”I really like this one, Sammy!” Rosie squealed as she sifted through the clothes in her closet. Spencer was great – he was nerdy and adorable and sweet, everything that she looked for in a guy. Her freshman year, Rosie had made the mistake of dating a guy that was focused, driven, and a bit on the serious side. She’d liked him (and eventually even fallen in love), but when he broke up with her a year and a half later for not being serious enough, she was able to take a step back and see that he had been all wrong for her. She’d just put in her earrings when her phone beeped from its place on the night stand. She read Spencer’s text and squealed again, hurrying out the door and waiting impatiently for the elevator to take her down to the ground floor. She slid into the passenger side and leaned over to kiss Spencer on the cheek, blushing slightly. ”Hey there!”

Spencer's 'friend zone' problem was a life long thing, the guy had only ever been in one relationship throughout his whole life, a relationship that lasted from freshman year to the middle of his junior year. She was a sweet girl, the pastors daughter, who lived down his street and had always been his friend when they were kids. He was as shocked as anyone when she had out of the blue kissed him one night and from then on they had been the cute little nerd couple until she had to move away, they tried to keep a long distance thing going but she eventually got bored and found someone else and that was it. Since then it had been hits and misses and though he was sure this with Rosie wasn't going to last simply because of his track record, he couldn't help but hope he was wrong.
The reaction his skin had after he lips had kissed it was hard not to notice, his whole face flushed red "Hey" he said in a shy sort of way turning to look at his wing mirror in an attempt to hide his beetroot face even though he was quite sure she had already seen it. Once he had backed out and had no excuse to be turned away he looked at the road sneaking a few glances at her as he drove "So, have you got anymore guesses to where I'm taking you?" he challenged with a smile. Spence hadn't really had a clue where to take her at first, that was until she had told him how much she would have loved the date he had already taken someone else on. She'd been less than thrilled when he'd refused to take her on a zoo date when she knew it was a recycled idea he had used to woo someone else but he hoped his surprise would make up for that and better the idea of a date at the zoo.

Rosie had only had two boyfriends her entire life. Her first was her freshman year of high school, and his name was Jimmy. Jimmy was nice, quiet, a little mousy. But nice. The two were in student council together, and he asked her to freshman formal. After that, the two of them dated for about four months before Rosie broke up with him. He just wasn’t… fun enough for her. Her next boyfriend wasn’t until her senior year of high school. His name was Darren, and he was popular; like, really popular. Captain of the basketball team, student council president, the works. And he was really, really hot. Rosie was completely smitten and couldn’t believe it when he asked her to prom. The two of them dated for about a year and a half, and he’s the one she lost her virginity to. They went to different colleges, but were only an hour and a half a part, so still saw each other on a regular basis. Eventually, Darren broke up with her because she wasn’t focused enough on her future. Right?
Rosie bit her lip and glanced down at her lap, smiling as Spencer blushed. He really was ridiculously adorable. She looked out the window as they backed out, bouncing her leg in anticipation. She sighed when he asked if she knew where he was taking him. ”No! I’ve been trying to figure it out, but I don’t have a single clue.” Turning to look at him, Rosie made her face as serious as she could. ”But it better live up to the zoo. Which is hard to do, because the zoo is my favorite place in the world. Minus the bird exhibit,” she said matter of factly, running a hand through her short hair.

For the most part, Spence wasn't the shy nervous type, he wasn't the loud confident one in group situations but when he met new people or was in a situation where he was the stranger to a group of people he was more than comfortable introducing himself and holding conversations. It wasn't even that Spencer usually got shy with women, most of his closest friends were girls and meeting women to him wasn't often any different to meeting guys simply because he didn't often see girls in that relationship way. But Rosie made Spencer incredibly nervous, she made his heart beat so fast it felt like it could pump it's way through his chest, it took hardly anything to send his skin the color of a tomato, he found himself stuck for words and when he did he filled the silence with the goofiest and more embarrassing stuttering laugh. She said it was cute but all he wanted to do was slap himself across the face each time he did it.
His skin slowly went back to it's normal color and Spencer mentally told himself to relax, he was completely himself when he was around her just a slightly more nervous version. He smirked a little when she told him she had no idea, glad that his surprise was still that. "Trust me, it's gonna be just as good, if not better than the zoo, but it's a bit of a drive away." he warned her, it wasn't really far but the park was just outside of town. After a skip through his relatively embarrassing music and some innocent flirting they we're finally nearly there "Ok, now I need you to shut your eyes, and don't peep!" he smiled slowing the car down until he did it before she drove through the park entrance, paid and then drove into the first enclosure slowly "Ok, you can open your eyes now" he insisted and just waited for her reaction to the zebra looking into her window.
