serenity had never even heard of der waffle haus before it was recommended to her and when she entered, she didn't know what to expect. to be honest, she didn't eat out a lot. she either didn't have the time or the money or the drive to get out of the house just to go back inside a different building. she liked the outdoors - she liked to photograph it, liked to bask in the sun, and if she was ever going to leave the house, odds were that she was going to continue to spend her day out in the sun. going out to eat...it wasn't something that she did unless she was treating a friend of hers to something special. going a few weeks sober or dropping their addictions or even something as simple as dumping that guy or gal who just wasn't right for them. she liked to treat people. very rarely did she ever go out to eat on her own terms. and very rarely did she ever go out to eat alone.
but james had insisted that she stopped lounging around the apartment that she rented out just waiting for one of her special cases to return home to her. he told her it was no way for a pretty young lady such as herself to live and while she had heard the speech many, many, many times before, when james coren told you to do something, you didn't ignore him. so instead of fighting him about it, she had taken the money he had offered her without complaining, let him dress her and push her out of the house and made her way to der waffle haus, which he had told her was the best place in the world to get breakfast food (all day, every day). she had of course gone kicking and screaming (by which she meant with references to how ihop was just as good and definitely more simple and she'd probably be better off making her own food) but there was no arguing with james. he wanted her to have a nice day out and god damn it, she was going to have one or he was going to go out there and FORCE her to have one.
so she figured that she'd spare him and just go the first time, even though she felt awkward stepping into the restaurant on her own. she rarely did things for herself. other people? sure - that was easy. other people just begged to be taken care of without actually having to say a thing. she could spot a thousand people who could use her help every time she left the house and she always tried to help them. picking up people with signs outside of walmart or buying the hobo that lived on the corner of main street a smoothie and sitting down just to talk...that was her thing. that was what she did and honestly she wasn't happy until she was doing something for other people. walking in alone and being seated alone and not having someone sitting opposite her who really needed her help or attention or affection...it was weird. it didn't feel quite right and she couldn't help but feel awkward in her skin as she took her seat.
she told by the hostess who had seated her that her waiter would be with her shortly and she gave her a tight smile before thanking her and tapping her fingers on the table, feeling antsy without someone there to occupy the time between when she was seated and when someone would find the time to come take her order. she grabbed the menu and scanned it with her eyes but honestly, there were only so many breakfast combinations that a restaurant could have before they had exhausted them all and she could almost predict the next thing on the menu. her mind wouldn't focus. normally she just ordered whatever the person with her recommended but she had no one this time - james hadn't even mentioned anything to her when he had told her about the restaurant. she made the decision to just ask the waiter what he recommended when he got there and went back to tapping on the table, feeling slightly antsy again as she looked around just begging for a case to come her way.

caleb loved his job, he really did. never in his life did he think that he would love being a waiter as much as he did, but not that this was what he was doing with his life he couldn't think of a better thing to be doing with his life. sure, he wasn't changing the world. he didn't have some fancy degree that people looked at him like he was some sort of saint for having. he didn't get to flaunt his intelligence or anything like that. but what he did get to do, was meet interesting new people ever day. and he did get to serve food. and in all reality this was the one place beside his home where he didn't have to feel like he was on guard all the time. where he could feel like he was someone that was worth something. not a whole hell of a lot, but it was something indeed. enough to keep a smile on his lips throughout the day and keep that monkey on his back from piping up. because, here, he was someone. they knew him here. he was respected here. and his co-workers liked him. his boss liked him. it wasn't a church or anything like that, but this was his sanctuary.
it had been a rather slow day at work that day. the regulars of course with the morning rush. that was to be expected when it came to a place that was known for it's waffles. but as the day progressed and morning turned into afternoon the hype died down and he was able to relax a bit. just enjoy the establishment in which he worked. his blue eyes scanned over the place, a small little smile on his lips as he did so. he had been told by more than one of his co-workers that his love for der waffle haus was a little strange given that it was just some diner. but it was his diner. if it weren't for this place, he wouldn't have a job. he wouldn't have been able to support himself for the first time in his life in a way that didn't involve prostitution. it was nice. it was perfect. and he owed a lot to the company who took a chance on a boy with no job history and drug charges in his criminal history. they took a chance on him, and he was forever grateful for it. so yeah, maybe he loved his job a little more than he should, but he couldn't help it.
his attention was taken away when the hostess let him know that she'd seated someone in his section and he nodded a thanks. with that smile on his lips he pushed off of counter and walked over to the blonde. now that was odd, seeing a woman as pretty as her without some boyfriend who was taking her out. or at least co-workers. none the less, there was a smile on his lips as he made his way to greet her. "hey there welcome to der waffle haus. i'm caleb, i'll be your waiter today. can i get you anything to drink? coffee? tea?" he asked, his typical greeting to new customers. of course with his regulars he had gotten to the point where he could pretty much bullshit with them without any sort of problem. new customers, though, he always put on his best face. he spoke in those soft tones that had gotten him the nickname bambi around the restaurant. not a nickname he was particularly fond of, but he wasn't going to argue with it. at least he accepted him.
his smile turned a little less professional and into something a bit more lopsided. "you look a bit lost with our menu. i'm guessing that someone told you to grab a bite here, then didn't give you any suggestions," he ventured with a small chuckle. he then looked at her a bit more closely, as if trying to figure her out. "if you want my opinion, i think you should go with a number four. it's french toast with strawberries. a side of hash browns, two eggs however you like them, and some bacon. we have some alternatives if you don't like meat, though," he suggested with that easy smile on his lips, and that all too welcoming expression on his features.

well this was certainly awkward. she never knew what to do when she was alone if only because of the fact that she never actually was alone. when she was born, she always had her brothers and by the time they were in school, her little sister was born and she was never lonely at home either. on top of that, she made friends with neighborhood kids easily and once school came around, she was never without somebody by her side. she was sociable, likable. she went out of her way to ensure that there was no reason for any person to ever have a problem with her and while she knew that there were always be people that disliked her, she still never went without company. then after graduating, she met the corens pretty quickly and then she had friends from school and then every single troubled person that she took in...no, serenity kuri was not someone who was often, if ever, found alone.
so this was just wrong to her, sitting there in a restaurant with no one across from her, reading a menu that she was only barely taking in and that she didn't know how to choose from anyway. she was completely lost as to what it meant to actually treat herself to something - how did one treat themselves? and was this something that people normally did? did people often go out to eat by themselves? wasn't it just weird to treat herself to some nice food without somebody there with her or meeting up with her? she didn't know; she wasn't sure how the rest of the world worked when she was so focused on her little safe haven, her cove so to speak. she didn't understand how other people worked when they weren't taking care of another person.
her savior came to her in the form of her waiter, who under any other circumstance, she might have noted to be kind of cute (she knew james would have at least and kicked her beneath the table and told her to smile and that at least was reason enough for her to say she should never go anywhere alone). she did look up for the final part of his greeting though, and a smile immediately pulled at the corner of her lips, which was what normally happened when she was around another person who looked even slightly cheery. moods were contagious to her and even if the smile was at first very businesslike, she still managed a sincere one of her own as she said, "just water thanks," and looked back at the menu with a hint of a frown.
then, bless his soul, her waiter was talking again, saying she looked a bit lost and she looked up at him again with a little more of a sheepish grin. "was i that obvious?" she asked with a light chuckle before looking down at the menu to locate number four and read along as he described the meal. it did sound good and while bacon was a little salty and she tried to avoid pork products if she could help it, she could always take it home and feed it to greg, who loved to rush over if he knew she'd been out to eat to clean up leftovers anyway. so she looked up again and said, "that sounds delicious, though, just perfect. i guess i'll take the number four." she bit down on her lower lip. "sorry i'm normally so much more decisive than this. or i have someone with me who knows the menu and...yeah, i'm sorry. i'm trusting you, though, mister, so this meal better be good." then she gave him a light, teasing grin to show she was joking and closed the menu, holding it up slightly for him to take.
