I COULD LEARN TO PITY FOOLS AS I'M THE WORST OF ALL
anyone could see that law school clearly took it's miserable toll on dexter fitzgerald. it was obvious that he wasn't the boy he was a year ago, the one who was living in a house full of stoners that held parties of fifty or sixty people every other night. he had matured, gotten a little bit more professional, and was now living in a dorm on the campus of yale. he was a changed person, which one might have assumed was a good thing. he wasn't acting like such a ruffian anymore, he was keeping his distance from alcohol and drugs, and he was starting over with a fresh slate. it was a good thing in anyone else' eyes, but in dexter's, it was terrible. he had become miserable. his group of close knit friends had abandoned him for trying to become the very thing that they mocked and when those friends ditched him, so did the friends that he had made through them. dexter's life no longer consisted of the fun that it did before he jump started his education, but instead, it was made up of strenuous work and an exhausting schedule, with friends that he had met through his classes and only a couple that knew what the meaning of fun was. sure, he could have turned his life back around and returned back to that house whenever he wanted to, however he didn't. he could have reverted back to smoking joints and binge drinking if he was that bored with university, though he didn't, because though it was boring at times and true, his new friends were a couple of lumps on a log, he took pleasure in being able to say that he was one of the few lucky people that got to turn their lives around completely. on top of that, he had already gotten so far. he was already doing so well, and ruining all of the progress he'd made? it was't a dream of his.
since retiring his old lifestyle, dexter was left with a lot of time on his hands. most of that time he didn't know what to do with and so it went wasted in his dorm, watching reruns of ncis, law and order, and whatever other lame television show happened to come on. he rarely bar hopped anymore, the main reason being that he had no one to do it with. he wasn't the type of person that found joy in doing things alone, especially when those things were more fun done with a friend. he knew of no girls that would pass as a good 'booty-call' and he wasn't very intent on finding one. obviously, everything that he used to find fun was off the list, so what did that leave him with? not too much. usually after class, he'd stop somewhere to get dinner then return to his dorm where it was just him, his bed, and his tv. believe it or not, he had grown not to mind the banality of the routine. even though he would have preferred a little more excitement that it, it was something that he got used to.
this particular evening, however, he had chosen to do something a little different with his night. though it wasn't much more exiting than his dorm-bedroom, it was different, and that's all he was looking for- a change. after a lecture that ended approximately at four-thirty in the afternoon, dexter stopped by the starbucks a couple of blocks away from the building he had just come from. he ordered a simple drink- straight black coffee- and sat himself in one of the outdoor cafe tables, perfect for people watching. he had to admit that fresh air compared to his stuffy dorm room was much more enjoyable.
