all at once it leaves you breathless
Short grocery lists made Janie Westmoreland a little disheartened. Though it was a bit silly, Janie knew she needed to be practical but since living on her own, even the simple task of grocery shopping had become something that the young blond treasured dearly. After all, it wasn't like she could get enough of something she had lived eighteen years not knowing after only two short years of experiencing. That was one of the few things Janie regretfully resented about her mother. She had never let Janie do anything at all, especially after after she had caught Janie playing with that boy so many years ago. After that, trust had gone out the window. There was nothing her mother trusted her with after that, even after all of those years passed by.
But, all of that was in the past and with a smile to reassure herself, Janie continued walking up and down the isles of the store, her small list firmly grasped between her slender fingers. As stated before, there wasn't much on it (coffee, fruit, milk, christmas lights, christmas cards, guitar strings, cookie ingredients and sprinkles) but it was enough to let Janie wander a bit. She had already placed the actual grocery items in the small basket that hung heavily down from her small arm and now she was looking for christmas things to decorate her small apartment with. With the money she'd earned selling some of her better photographs to an art type thing, Janie decided that the extra money she'd gained from it would be nice to use on something that her regular pay at the bakery couldn't buy --not necessary items.
Carefully, Janie's blue eyes wandered over each and every sparkling, glimmering item that lined the shelves. Her eyes sparkled in excitement at the site of all the lovely decoratives. Even though she'd been on her own for two years, this was the first christmas she would be spending on her own and not at home with her mother so it was, in turn, the first christmas she would have a reason to decorate. She could hardly contain herself with all of the butterflies rumbling around inside her as she placed the first box of lights into her growing heavier little basket and then a second box. Turning lightly on her heel, Janie searched the rest of the isle to find her desired christmas things and placed them in her basket as well, noting that she should probably grab a second basket due to the growing full capacity of the one she was carrying.
It wasn't long before Janie found herself immersed in another isle, still with the too-full basket weighing on her slight forearm. She was only looking at cards now though, so she assumed that she could handle the heavy basket with ease. Unfortunately, she was wrong and before long, her thin arm gave way and the basket (as well as it's contents) were on the floor. Her fruit was bruised and the coffee grounds had now covered the floor but the bigger mess was the gallon of milk that had exploded all over the floor, her clothes and the clothes of a young man not much older than herself who had been standing a bit too closely. Her first instinct was a childish one but it still found its way to the surface. Quickly, her hands flew to her face and covered her mouth. With the food and lights spread across everywhere and the young man covered in her milk, Janie felt nothing but terrible and momentarily, was at a loss for words. She just hoped that the young man would be slightly understanding about the situation. |

mr brightsideI JUST CAN'T LOOK, IT'S KILLING ME, AND TAKING CONTROL. JEALOUSY, TURNING SAINTS INTO THE SEA, SWIMMING THROUGH SICK LULLABIES, CHOKING ON YOUR ALIBIS, BUT IT'S JUST THE PRICE I PAY, DESTINY IS CALLING ME, OPEN UP MY EAGER EYES. in most relationships, a boyfriend and girlfriend's dream nights together are romantic, quiet, and typically spent together. in austin and savanna's relationship, it usually lasted an hour before savanna decided she had some place else to be, which usually meant the infamous keeper's strip club in downtown new haven. the couple planned these nights every now and then, but there were no chocolate covered cherries or cutesy lifetime movies, but there was wine. lots and lots of wine, however that was usually taken when savanna left to go to 'work.' austin knew exactly what kind of 'work' she had to do, which always involved taking her clothes off and rubbing old men junk. any other boyfriend wouldn't put up with savanna's sort of lifestyle. another man would have left a long time ago if they knew that when their girlfriend left them with a goodnight kiss, she was always going to mess around with someone else later that night. austin couldn't find it in himself to leave her, though. he convinced himself that she was too beautiful to keep holed up in his hartford apartment all day. she was too wild, as well. she was like a wild stallion- she couldn't be broken. she was like his mother in that way. actually, she was like that woman in more ways than one. besides, taking her clothes off was her job, and on most nights, it paid well.
on this night in particular, savanna left rather early. usually she'd wait until eight or nine o'clock, but tonight it was around four in the afternoon when she slipped out of his grasp. as always, there was no struggle to make her stay from austin. there was a 'i'll see you later, baby' from savanna when even austin knew that she probably wouldn't be back until that time tomorrow. austin retreated back to his main room, where he found himself on the couch. like most nights, he'd sit there and watch whatever happened to come on HBO or starz. it was an easy night for austin, and even though he wished he could spent it with his girlfriend, savanna had other priorities, ones that mattered more than austin did. she told him that she 'loved him, but a girl has to eat and stay off the streets.' he had heard the lecture so many times before, he didn't question it. he accepted it, because he had been brainwashed by savanna. every belief that he had about how women shouldn't cheat, regardless of their situation, had been wiped clean of his mind.
on some of these nights, though, austin didn't feel like being stuck at home. it's not like he followed savanna to keeper's like a lost puppy, because even if he did he wouldn't be able to control himself. usually he'd go to the local sports bar or out to eat, or somtimes he'd go somewhere as simple as a grocery store. that's actually what he planned on doing this particular late afternoon. he turned off his tv, fed guster, his enormous white, black, and orange goldfish, and pulled on his coat. he grabbed his keys off of the credenza by the doorway, and left his apartment. he could find an excuse to go anyway. usually he didn't like going out without savanna's permission, as silly as that sounds. for some reason, she thought it was alright for her to cheat on him, but not the other way around. of course austin would never even think about doing such a thing, it just showed what a screwed up relationship he was in. although obviously he didn't mind or else he would't still be in it. in this case, though, he really did need to go out. he remembered that one of the college freshmen that he tutored had their birthday coming up soon. while didn't go all out for these things, especially with people that he only knew through school, but he could risk giving them a card without looking like he actually had a heart.
it was when he was in the card lane, looking under 'birthday cards for friends' when he noticed an unfamiliar looking white-blonde coming down this aisle. she looked about his age, as well as he looked awfully friendly. he kept his distance of a few feet, but after all, she was near the section that he was at. he was reaching for the one that he wanted when he felt a splash on the ground, which then ricocheted onto his jeans and some of his black coat. he looked down at the mess at the floor, and it was because he didn't know who this person was and that they were in a public store than he didn't go apeshit on her. "you're kidding me." he muttered to himself, low enough that she (hopefully) couldn't understand him. he looked away from the disaster on the ground and back to the young lady standing a foot or so away from him. "thank you, for that." he said, coldly, as he made eye contact with the small girl. eight hundred fifty one words, austin/hannah and janie/summer, outfit, oh my god i love them already <3 |

all at once it leaves you breathless
Janie expected his words, though she knew he had tried to hide the first part of it. It had been her mistake for not toting around a little shopping kart, though, and her fault for spilling everything and making a mess of the store. And now, squatted on the floor, looking tinier than ever, still staring at the mess in a bit of disbelief, it was her fault for ruining both their clothes. Of course, aside from her dark leggings Janie knew her clothes would wash out and be good as new once she finished. But his clothes were all dark, dark, dark.
Dark, dark Jeans. Dark, dark Jacket. Dark, dark Glasses. And covering them was white, white milk.
Slowly, Janie eyed him and the mess and let her hands fall down so that they were no longer covering her pink lips. "I'm so sorry..." she whispered, more to herself than to him, letting her icy blue gaze finally meet with his green one as she stood to meet his eyes properly. Still, she was so much smaller than him and Janie found herself having to look up to meet his eyes the way she intended. Personally, she was more embarrassed than anything. She was twenty years old for goodness' sakes! And she was still making the petty mistakes of her seven year old personality. In some ways, she supposed that her mother was right. Maybe, if she was doing things as dumb as these on a regular occurrence, she shouldn't have moved out at all.
Janie held his gaze before blushing a bright shade of pink and looking away from him and back to the floor. Wow, she certainly had made a mess hadn't she? So many things scattered among the floor. She would have to clean them all up so the store didn't have to. Sighing a bit, she tore her stare from the dirty tiles and let it fall more calmly back upon the young man. More confidently now, she uttered her previous two word sentence, adding more to it.
"I'm sorry. So so unbelievably sorry." she ended up squeaking out, failing her attempts at sounding more brave and sincere. But she did feel guilty. Very very guilty. "Do you think there is any way to get the milk stains out of your clothes? Because if not I could, replace them or something..." she finished, remembering the extra cash she had saved to buy her decorations. Technically, she could hold off another year without the decorations. She didn't need lights to decorate her apartment and if she wanted to send out some cards, she was crafty enough to make them herself if she really wanted. And if that was what it took to keep him from being mad at her, well Janie supposed it was logical.
And truthfully, she could have let her rare sarcasm get the better of her but really, he had done nothing but play the victim and that deserved nothing rude from her. Eying his dark clothes Janie, gulped nervously. She certainly hoped his clothing of choice wasn't expensive, because her "spare change" probably wouldn't have sufficed if he agreed to let her replace them. However, she didn't really need the guitar strings and cookie fixings. And that might help.
Janie shook her head uncomfortably, a lock of her white-blond curls falling carelessly into her pale but red-tinged face. There was no denying it. Jane was simply a bit of a klutz and, to be more blunt about it she sometimes ended up as a walking disaster, leaving others in her danger zone. Whoever this poor guy was, he had just been one of the unlucky few to get caught in the inevitable cross fire. |

mr brightsideI JUST CAN'T LOOK, IT'S KILLING ME, AND TAKING CONTROL. JEALOUSY, TURNING SAINTS INTO THE SEA, SWIMMING THROUGH SICK LULLABIES, CHOKING ON YOUR ALIBIS, BUT IT'S JUST THE PRICE I PAY, DESTINY IS CALLING ME, OPEN UP MY EAGER EYES. while he stood there and looked at the girl crouched on the ground, he realized that his reaction may have been too harsh and too rude for this situation. it was a silly mistake. it's not like she had dropped the basket on the ground with any intention to ruin austin's clothing. he wouldn't even say the clothing was ruined. it was only milk, right? he wasn't any laundry expert, but he could wash clothing and as far as he knew, milk didn't stain. at least, he knew it didn't stain terribly. so maybe he was a little rough on this complete stranger. she looked like a nice person, and a very sweet one as well. she didn't deserve to be yelled at by austin for an accident, just as much as austin didn't deserve to be caught in the crossfire.
she eventually stood up from her position on the ground, that made her look so much smaller than she actually was. in fact, she looked like a child while she was stooped on the ground like she was. when she finally rose, he could see what a small figure she had. it was nothing like savanna's graceful figure that actually reminded him of a giraffe. this girl was shorter than savanna, but just as small around the waist. she had a cute face and a voice to match. "i'm sorry. so, so unbelievably sorry. do you think there is any way to get the milk stains out of your clothes? because if not i could, replace them or something..." he felt even worse when she offered to replace his clothing. sure, she had just spilled milk all over the place, including his shoes, jeans, and the bottom of his coat, but the damage couldn't have been that bad, right?
thinking about the girl's offer made his mouth twitch at the corners. at least there were still a few good souls out there. by good souls, he meant that there were still strangers that were considerate enough to offer replacing everything 'ruined' on his body. while everything that the milk touched could easily be fixed, and perhaps she knew that and she was just freaking out, she still was kind enough to propose something that most people wouldn't. it got him thinking, again. what if savanna had done something like what this little lady had? she probably wouldn't even give her victim a second glance. if her prey was an attractive boy, maybe she would. she'd offer him some sexual favor and if he rejected, she probably wouldn't even give him an apology. this was one of those moments that made austin wish that he had a girlfriend like this person. true, he barely knew her- in fact all he knew was that she just spilled her groceries all over the place, including on him. she stopped and apologized, and even was willing to pay for the wreckage, so she must have been a good person.
listening to her prattle, he felt even worse about himself. it was an accident, after all. he'd replied to her with a sarcastic, but rude, comment, and that was enough to make a person feel bad, which is probably what he had done to this girl. it wasn't her fault that the grocery store had cheap ass baskets. one expects to be able to pile it up without worrying about it giving out, but that's exactly what this one had done.
he inhaled, held it for a couple of quick seconds, and then he let it all out, exhaling deeply. he shifted his ray bans from his left hand to his right, and ran a hand through his gel-covered hair with the now empty hand. he shook his head slightly, before he opened his mouth. "no, i'm... i'm sure my clothing is fine," finally rang his husky voice. he shouldn't have been taking out his frustration with his cheating girlfriend out on this girl. it was accident- that's all it was. "it's just milk." he ended, raising the corners of his mouth into a slight, half smile, something that he was famous for doing- and looking good while doing it. six hundred ninety six words, austin/hannah and janie/summer, outfit, oh my god i love them already <3 |

all at once it leaves you breathless
Forcing a slight smile, Janie eyed the young man curiously. She was probably overreacting about needing to buy him new clothes but he had seemed so displeased with her that was willing to do whatever it took to ease that. Luckily for her, he seemed to have a change of heart as well. His expression softened and so did his words.
"No, i'm... i'm sure my clothing is fine, it's just milk." he said, not really stammering over his words but more testing them to make sure they worked well before he finished. Janie smiled lightly, her baby blues lighting up a bit more when he spoke. She was glad to see that he wasn't really mad at her anymore but really, she was more interested in the way he hesitated his words. She had never done that before, not even in front of her mother. The sad truth was that Janie couldn't really keep her thoughts to herself.
"Are you sure? I mean, I don't really know about stains but it's gotten white all over your clothes." she blond persisted, eyeing his outfit once more to avoid his eyes. She felt tiny next to him, even more so than normal and she wasn't sure if it was a good or a bad thing yet. What she did know was that she wanted to make her wrong a right, before she left a lasting impression as the "annoying girl who dumped milk on him at the store". Despite the fact that she may never have seen him again after this, Janie still didn't want to be thought of badly.
Quietly she bent down to place her fallen items back in her basket and held them, waiting for someone the come by and notice her mess. Poor Janie could only imagine how angry they were going to be with her once they saw the puddles of white on the ground. Maybe she'd offer them to help clean up, too?
Janie stood awkwardly, unsure of where to go from here. Some other costumers walked by and eyed the two of them confusedly. She must have looked like nothing more than a child next to his taller frame. But she ignored their glances and looked around a bit. Yes, this certainly was an unusual situation. And the twenty year old girl had no other distractions but the surrounding area.
That was until an employee stumbled upon them.
"What happened here? he asked. The employee was a man of maybe thirty or forty, bigger than both Janie and the boy standing in front of her. His hairline was receding but his frame was large and made him equally as intimidating as the other boy. Janie stayed quiet a moment before answering quietly,
"I accidentally spilled everything in my basket and the milk carton broke open and spilled everywhere. I cleaned everything up but I don't really have anything to mop it up with..." she started a bit quietly. The manager just shook his head, glancing at all the items she had piled back into her basket.
"Well no wonder, do you see all the things you had piled in there?" he went on, chuckling a bit. He turned his direction to the other boy. "You know kid, you shoulda told your girlfriend there to get a kart instead." the older gentlemen finished, leaving Janie's eyes a bit wide and her mouth open a bit. Sure it was a bit of a silly mistake but Janie wasn't sure what to say to that one. |
