MAYBE SOMEDAY YOU'LL LOOK UP, AND BARELY CONSCIOUS, YOU'LL SAY TO NO ONE, "ISN'T SOMETHING MISSING?" YOU WON'T CRY FOR MY ABSENCE, I KNOW. YOU FORGOT ME LONG AGO. AM I SO UNIMPORTANT? AM I SO INSIGNIFICANT? ISN'T SOMETHING MISSING...? ISN'T SOMEONE . . . |
missing me?
she had been stood up! well not necessarily stood up so to speak. it was technically just supposed to be a business meeting that she was supposed to attend on behalf of her mother who had been bed ridden with the flu for the past week. however, what her mother had failed to tell her was that she had called the executives that she had been supposed to meet at the hotel and told them that she wasn't going to be able to make it and they were just going to have to reschedule. then she called di's father to tell him to reschedule a meeting and told the hotel to no longer hold the room they were supposed to be in. the only person she forgot to call? dia herself, who had been slaving around the place trying to get free time from the firm and who had practically gotten on her knees and begged her brother to drive her to the hotel seeing as her car was about on its last legs and she hadn't had time to go out and look for one she felt was suitable. so when she arrived at the hotel fifteen minutes before the meeting was supposed to be, she was surprised to learn that the ad executives? weren't there. and that the room she was supposed to be in? empty.
honestly, how rude, to be stood up on a business date. of course from there, she probably should have left and just carried on her way. there was no need for her to stick around a hotel if there was no meeting. however, she didn't. instead, she stayed and waited around a little bit because it hadn't quite occurred to her that maybe the meeting had been cancelled. she figured that, hey, maybe the guys were just a little late and it was all a big misunderstanding. when they showed up, she'd be able to sort out the whole thing and she would have done it all on her own. no need to call her mom and get help; no need to have her dad pull strings. this was something she could do. just her. diana mason. so she paced around the lobby, admired some of the artwork hanging around and chatted briefly with a woman who passed by who complimented her scarf (people with good taste were always worth her time). however, when an hour passed and still no one showed up, it wasn't to wait that dia flopped down in the nearest chair. it was to sulk.
honestly, she had been excited. she was never given responsibilities like this. they normally went to peyton, the law student, or caedan, who had since straightened his life out from when he was younger and who had enough charisma to cover up his lack of business etiquette. they were the mason siblings who could be trusted with important tasks. the masons who were too stupid to handle a business meeting or too naive to understand what all the behind the scenes dealings meant. she? well she was shoved to the side and used in advertisements on occasion and every now and then was able to throw in her ideas about the decor of the shop. but truth be told? pony expresso was a mason business run entirely by everyone but her. like she wasn't part of the family. when she had finally been given this opportunity, she had done everything she could to be prepared for it. she even talked to peyton about some of the technical terms she might have to use. and all for nothing.
so she nearly collapsed into that seat and she buried her face in her hands to hide her embarrassment. honestly, could she do anything right? evidently not. she shot her mom a quick text to thank her for so generously remembering to tell her that the meeting had been cancelled, checked a few emails and then looked around the lobby with a sigh. she couldn't believe she had sat there for an hour...for nothing. how embarrassing. she couldn't just get up and leave now, either. she'd have to wait, either for someone to pick her up or someone she knew to pass by...or for someone who looked kind enough to lie and say they were waiting for her to walk past. honestly, she was looking for any opportunity to leave. so instead of staying in that pitiful position, she sat up tall, like she was looking for someone or waiting and tried hard not to let her disappointment show in her features.
