Cain usually had a pretty strict rule that you never went out with a girl that you’d already been in a relationship with. More times than not it just turned out to be a big mistake and everything that had been bad when you had split was suddenly coming back to bite you in the ass full force and there wasn’t a damn thing that you could do to stop it. And as far as listening to his own rules went he was usually pretty good about it. There weren’t a lot of rules that he lived his life by, just a handful when it really came down to it, but this one was one that he’d always followed. Ex’s were not somewhere that you went again. You’d left that situation for a reason and there was no reason to go back to it. Yet, Cain found himself taking a trip down memory lane.
When he’d told Jagger what he was going to be doing of course he got a whole bunch of nothing good from his best friend. He didn’t love Jagger because he was a nice person or any shit like that. It didn’t change the fact that it almost shocked him the way that he stood up for her in a way that he hadn’t even done when they had dated. Most people like to attribute his inability to have a girlfriend stick around in high school was because he and Jagger were too far up each other’s asses. Either way, he knew that he had been the one that did the majority of the fucking up when it came to Olivia. He wouldn’t go so far as to say that he had loved her or anything like that, but he most certainly had cared for the girl and yeah, there was a part of him that missed her. Even if Jagger seemed to think that it was a terrible idea igniting an old flame. And maybe it was, but, really, who knew.
He was almost shocked that Jagger hadn’t done more to try and make sure that the date, or well two friends meeting up, didn’t happen. For all the ways that the Wilson boy was Cain’s best friend he also was an incredible pain in the ass. Not in that way either you perverts. Jesus. No, Jagger just liked things how they were and Cain understood that about him. There was a part of him, though, that was dying for a woman’s touch. Dying to have more than just sex with some beautiful girl. Maybe he was getting old, or maybe it was just a phase, but either way what he wanted was a girlfriend. He couldn’t be sure if that was what would happen between Olivia and himself, but hell, he was at least willing to give it a try.
So after finishing his last tattoo for the night he had gone home and changed into a simply button down and some slacks. No tie or any shit like that because that would be a little too dressy for him. The sleeves were pushed up to his elbows and he put on a vest but left it open. Cain never really had been the sort to get too dressed up for anyone or anything but he didn’t mind looking good. Especially given that they hadn’t seen each other in a few years. In those years his face had gotten more manly, his hair a bit fuller, he just hoped that she hadn’t changed too much. Olivia wasn’t the type that you would expect Cain with, but she was beautiful, and she was sweet in her own way, and he’d had his reasons for dating her even if they looked odd together.
Walking into the bar he went up to the counter and ordered a beer before turning to lean on said counter with his eyes trained on the door for that all too familiar petite frame. She should be here any moment, and if she stood him up? Well, there were more than a few attractive women in the bar, he was sure he could find one to take home. He had a feeling that she wouldn’t be standing him up, though, that would just be too bitchy of a move.

[atrb=width,400] the oncoming storm What was she thinking? Cain… of all people Cain Costello was who she was going to have after work drinks with on this arrived too soon Friday night. She hadn’t spent more than two minutes around the man since her junior year of high school, when she saw him in town one night while out with her friends, and that didn’t exactly go so well. She didn’t know why she had even replied when he sent her that message online the other day, sure it was open to anyone but him of all people why did he have to show up and start making things complicated again. She was standing there in the bathroom looking at her reflection no one knew what she was going to do tonight, and no one would ever know that she of all people was going to see her ex. Ruffling the long dark locks that flowed from her scalp, Olivia let out another deep breath trying to prepare herself to leave the bathroom out to her car and to Sully’s a bar she was oh so familiar with.
Olivia was strong willed and extremely bossy, she got what she wanted eighty percent of the time because she worked for it and Cain had been no exception to her ways. She was a sophomore when they started dating, just fifteen, almost sixteen years old when she had her eyes drawn to the dark mysterious bad boy that was her brother’s age. Atticus and James had hated the boy that Olivia so much wanted to make hers but she didn’t care, his dark and brooding personality was just what she wanted at that time in her life, just a little bad to go in with all of her good and playful fun that came with the ditzy personality she led everyone to believe she had at that stage in life. Okay, she let out a third sigh nodding and speaking to her reflection, Okay, I can do this. she told herself trying to get the courage to actually go to the what they had deemed drinks between two old friends… not a date, date. Leaving the bathroom, she picked up her purse from her desk rummaging around for her keys thinking back to the days she had spent as the girlfriend to the bad boy. She had had to chase him for a while, prove to him that she was worth the wile and she wasn’t taking no as an answer. His best friend had hated her and her friends had hated him but once they were together it didn’t matter to Olivia, he was the best thing there was next to well… James but that didn’t matter because James was something she could never have, Cain was and he wanted her back. Getting in her car, she started it and automatically turned the radio off; she needed to think prepare herself mentally for what she was going to do. God it was like a damn death march or something, she wasn’t going into battle or on a suicide mission she was going to have a martini and talk to an “old friend” she was stressing herself out and she knew it. As she drove along towards the bar on the other side of town, she let herself slip back into the memories of the past. He would never let Olivia in, and she hated that. She wanted to know the depths of the boy she was dating she wanted to know why he was so dark and serious all the time, why he barely ever smiled that amazing smile of his to anyone but her and only then when it was just them in private. She wanted to fall in love with him but he wouldn’t let her and eventually she couldn’t take it anymore. The constant bickering and arguing about how he wouldn’t let her in came to a stop, they broke up, their rocky relationship over for good. He was graduating in a few months and she still have two years left before college. Nearing Sully’s, Olivia, could feel her heart start to race. Why was she feeling like this, sure she still cared about him, every time she had gotten a glance of him in public or saw an old photo in an album of the two of them together her heart melted, but it had been years since they were together five almost six years to be exact yet here she was still as nervous and jittery as the first time he came to pick her up for a date. Finally after what seemed like an eternity the petite brunette pulled into a parking space near the front of the bar, close was good in case she needed to run away if things got awkward right? She checked her appearance in the mirror, her headband was in place, make up not smudged and her hair was flowing down perfectly. If she was going to see him she damn well better look her best after all, she had dressed up slightly more for work today than usual since she knew what she was going to be doing after wards. With one last deep breath, she opened the door of her car and stepped out, smoothing the skirt of her dress. One last though of getting back in her car and just driving away, texting him that something had come up, so that she could avoid the anticipated awkward tension that would be there. She rembered how he called her Kitten, his pet name for her when they were speaking online, and how it had melted her heart and made her smile. She reached the door, with one last deep breath she pushed it open, entering the surroundings she remembered so well from her past; automatically her eyes were drawn to his ever so familiar face, the messy hair she had loved to play with, and the serious dark eyes that held so much secret that he wouldn’t let anyone see past. There was no turning back now. Hey there Candy Cain she painted on a smile as she greeted him with her old nickname for him walking closer to the bar where he was standing. |

He had to be crazy. That was the only explanation for why this was happening. He had to be bat shit insane for wanting to rekindle this old flame with Olivia. Not that he'd ever claimed to be any kind of sane or anything like that, but there was a certain level of going over some invisible line when it came to going on a date with someone you hadn't really spoken to for six years. The man couldn't put his finger on it, though, he couldn't come up with any sort of reasoning for his decision and he supposed that he'd never be able to. He wasn't really the sort to dwell to long on the decisions that he made. Sometimes he was damn right impulsive. That had to be what this was all about. The impulsion that came from a rush of old emotions brought up by talking to her. Nothing more.
For Cain had cared about the girl. He really had. Sure, not enough to let her in or even really stand up to her all that much to Jagger in his youth -not that he didn't defend her at all, he wasn't that shitty of a boyfriend- but life at that time. It wasn't any kind of usual or sane. He had been going through things that most teens should never have to go through. Having his father beat him like he had all those years ago, it wasn't right, but, he wasn't as hung up on it as he should've been. And maybe he was more hung up on it than he even realized. His ability to trust at that time in his life hadn't been something very integral in his personality. He trusted the Wilsons, and Delilah, and that was is.
With time came healing and whatever other bullshit about everything will turn out right that one would like to throw in there. And even though he wasn't going to be the guy that babbled on about how nothing would forever be terrible. Nor would he talk about his life became only better and better after he never spoke to his father again. It was the truth. He had healed. He had grown the fuck up. It still wasn't often that he let people into his world and his heart and everything that she had wanted at that chaotic time of his life, but he was a lot better about it. Even if he wouldn't want to talk about it often. Cain almost felt, though, that he owed Olivia and explanation. that he owed it to her for her to know just why her boyfriend hadn't really been the most open book. Even if this didn't end up leading to more than a friendship. Which, well, Cain found himself more than alright with that idea.
Those deep blue eyes of his scanned around the place searching for that little brunette to make her appearance. It wasn't too long that he'd had to wait though before eyes fell on her form. She'd grown up, that much was for sure. Sure when they had been an item she was beautiful and anyone with eyes could see it, but there was something more to her appearance now. A slight slimming of her face to take away whatever baby fat had still been there. The walk of a woman who knew what she wanted and where she wanted to go. She was a woman now, not the girl that he'd dated, and he couldn't help but feel all the more attracted to her because of it.
"Hey there Kitten," he spoke in a damn close to purr before setting his beer down on the bar so that his arms were free. He didn't care if it wasn't proper, or if it wasn't the right thing to do given how they had ended. Then again Cain wasn't the sort that gave much of a damn about a lot of things. Those long arms of his gathered her up and pulled her body to his holding her close for a few moments. He took in the scent of her, it was different, but still very much the same. It was her. He felt the softness of her hair against his face, and the way that her small frame had always just fit into his. He let the embrace last for maybe a moment longer than was normal then pulled away to look at her, his eyes gazing right into hers. "You look beautiful," he spoke softly letting hands rest on her hips as he pressed a kiss to her forehead before fully pulling away. "I'm glad you came," and he really was, though, he'd be a liar to say that he'd been aware of just how glad he was before that very moment.

[atrb=width,400] the oncoming storm She just looked at him and it brought her emotions for the handsome now grown man in front of her back at full speed. This wasn’t supposed to be happening, he was supposed to be the holder of the worst boyfriend in history award and Olivia was supposed to hate him. Why the hell was he making her feel this way without even saying anything? She had tried for years to convince herself that she hated the man standing in front of her but she just couldn’t now bring herself to hate him. His only fault had been that he didn’t open up. Never once had he hit her, cheated on her or tried to make her feel inferior. God why couldn’t he have just opened the fuck up with her. Her heart racing as she heard his voice for the first time in six years, that deep smooth voice of his coming out of that perfectly formed mouth of his. She was melting her heart in her stomach and oh god she still loved him. bad Olivia, bad bad bad. she told herself inside her head as she walked through the crowded darkly lit bar towards Cain. She would never talk to anyone about the relationship she had had with Cain back in the day, she didn’t want to hear people’s judgmental opinions on the brooding dark bad boy that everyone thought he was. Not when they were together and especially not after she had broken things off with him. She had her reasons and she didn’t want to explain to everyone that she broke up with the boy she was in love with because he wouldn’t tell her what she wanted to hear. She had always thought she was a good girlfriend but since him she hadn’t had a serious relationship that lasted more than two months. Whether she wanted to admit it or not, the man she was standing in front of about to speak to had damaged her heart, and there were only two people in this world that could fix it. James, her brothers’ best friend who had been her real first love, the only person she was truly in love with back to this day, and Cain. God his voice listening to that voice so smooth and addictive. She had always loved to listen to him talk, and now here he was calling her kitten like he had so many times in the past. That nick name had been something she was proud of, even if the base for it was silly and not the exciting story that she’d like it to be. She was to this day apparently still his kitten, god she loved the thought of that. Wrapping her thin arms around the man in front of her, she let all worries she had had for the night fly right out the door. This is going to be better than I thought she thought to herself.
Olivia didn’t want the embrace she held with Cain to end. He was more mature looking down, a little more rough around the edges but softer somehow too. She herself had matured so much since they had last said more than two words to each other. His tall frame was so perfectly built for hers to fit into, she buried her face into his chest, comforted with his familiar scent and feel. She never wanted to let go. Olivia had the personality and emotional hardness to not let people fuck with her Cain Costello had the ability to break through that she was a big softie for him, and apparently all the hatred she had tried to make herself possess for him over the hears was failing. Oh god he kissed her forehead shit shit shit, stay strong she had to keep telling herself. Thank you She smiled at his compliment on her appearance, looking at him, the shirt he was wearing was just tight enough as were his jeans to accentuate all the perfections of his imperfection. So do you, handsome She knew that under that shirt was a body that was beautiful tainted with the scars from his past that she loved to feel and wanted to mend so badly but was never allowed to. I’m glad I came too, now looking around the bar then back into his beautiful deep blue eyes with her gorgeous brown ones, the young woman gave the man in front her a genuine smile, Buy me a drink? This was going to work, she told herself standing close to him as if there was a magnetic pull between her and her ex. She was glad she hadn’t run away from the situation when she had the chance, and god did she hope she wouldn’t regret that later. |

So, he was an idiot, or he was insane, or maybe just a total dumb ass. Really the Jagger voice in his head couldn't settle on a insult that fit the situation that Cain had gotten himself into. But much like he ignored the real Jagger he was able to push that voice into the back of his mind because part of him, hell, almost all of him was hoping for something more out of this than just getting a drink. A drink between friends as he'd called it to try and get her to come out. He wanted more, though, he was getting older, he was getting lonely. Life was starting to paint out to him what his was going to be like if he didn't start finding someone, and that was filled with mostly....well....Jagger.
It was true enough that he and Jagger had whatever it was going on. Fuck, it'd been going on for years. But it wasn't love, he knew that much. He was pretty sure that Jagger was immune to love. He was a robot. That was it. He needed something...soft in his life. A touch that was gentle and loving. A smile that was sweet and genuine. He needed something that wasn't the harsh and jagged edges that surrounded him in the form of almost all the friends that he had. He loved them, he really did, they were his family. But, hell, he wanted something more. Something different. Someone that he could just hold without being given shit over all of it. Someone who was sweet and caring. Olivia, well, she was damn near perfect for the role. She always had been. She was like some kind of wonderful. Sweet, with the perfect amount of fire to her. It really wasn't a wonder that she'd been the longest relationship he'd ever had.
And here they were again, though, Cain wasn't so sure that it was going to become much more than just a drink, a simple drink. This changed when she got close to him, though, when she looked at him because he knew that look. He knew all her looks if he really were to be honest about things for a moment. And that look, well, it was so much more than just she was happy to see him. Cain could assume that she was feeling the same kind of butterflies that he was. That the same nerves were taking over her own body as his and whatever territory they were stepping into now was going to end up being something that neither of them had expected.
If there was one thing that Cain had always noticed about this girl, it was the way that she just fit. How he could rest his chin on top of her head when he wrapped his arms around her. She just fit, and it was wonderful. An almost cocky smile took over his lips as she held onto him though, a little more than sure that she didn't want to let go of him anytime soon. Which really. He was more than fine with. "Handsome, huh? It's strange being called that again. Mostly I just get ass hole and fucker, ya know, typical Jagger compliments," he spoke then let out an easy chuckle. For Jagger never had been the most endearing sort of man, even if Cain loved him all the same for his jack ass ways.
He moved his body so that he was standing more beside her and let his arm fall around her petite shoulders holding her close to his side. "Yeah, lets get you a drink," he agreed then leg her over to the bar. It was nice, to say the least, being close to her again. Feeling her body close to his. Cain was enjoying himself, he really was. "What can I get for ya?"

[atrb=width,400] the oncoming storm She couldn’t be so sure what the motive behind Cain’s sudden invitation for drinks had been. She knew that something more was there when he looked at her; it took all she had to look into his deep icy blue eyes and not attack him. Just flat out almost rape him right here on the bar. Her emotions were raging and the vibe that she was getting from her ex was just the same. Things were going to lead to more than just a drink that night, and as much as she wanted to fight that realization off, she knew it would happen. When you put Olivia and Cain in a room together the world just stopped and the emotions took over. That had to of been why they worked so well together. With age Olivia had matured from the ditzy bimbo she had made herself out to be in high school, to a mature logical woman that she was now working in the grown up world. She chose to be alone and single because up until yesterday, she hadn’t been able to have who she really truly wanted. Sure there had been the flow of various men in her life since she was sixteen, but none had really stuck. She was twenty one, she had just started her career and she was ready to finish growing up and just settle down, screw the constant dating and hooking up with various men picked up at bars like so many of her friends were still doing. She wanted someone to love and hold her, and not mind that she had the bossiest personality around. Giving a slight roll of her eyes at the cocky grin that painted Cain’s face, Olivia laughed. He was handsome, and anyone who couldn’t see that was obviously fucking blind. She laughed at his comment about the verbs that his best friend Jagger called him. Jagger is just jealous he isn’t as attractive as you Candy Cain. Jagger was Cain’s other half, and someone that had never been to fond of Olivia, especially while she was dating Cain. Deep down she knew that he was jealous of the relationship between the two brunettes but at the same time, she hated that he couldn’t just get over the fact that Cain was happy with Olivia for that time they were together. That was definitely one thing she hadn’t missed when the two broke up, his dickface best friend. Of course her own friends were never team bad boy, but were nowhere near as rude and vocal about it as Jagger had been. As they moved towards the bar, the young woman instinctively slipped her hand into the much larger hand that belonged to Cain. Her hand always had felt so tiny in comparison to his, her everything was tiny compared to him and that’s one of the reasons she had loved being near him so much she felt safe and sheltered when he was beside her. She didn’t care if it sent the wrong message or not, she liked the feeling of her hand in his. Standing close to him, she glanced up at his perfect face then around at the countless bottles of liquor behind the bar. Anything is fine, honey flashing a warm smile at him she gave a slight shrug. Olivia wasn’t picky when it came to her liquor; she would drink just about anything. how about just a beer for right now? she told not only Cain but the bartender. Flashing a white toothy smile, she felt sixteen again for just a moment knowing one hundred percent that this wasn’t going to be a mistake, and she was ready for whatever was going to happen or rekindle itself between the two past lovers. So how has your day been Cain? taking a sip from the beer bottle that had been placed in front of her, she leaned against the bar looking up at him, interested in what he was going to say. |

When Cain really sat down and thought about the span of his relationship history he could easily say that Olivia was the only serious thing that he'd ever had going for him. After all, he wasn't the kind of man that went looking for a relationship, especially in his high school years. He simply...well, he simply had better things to do with his time than try to find a girlfriend. Besides with everything that happened in his life as well as those of the Wilson's clan in those years, there wasn't a lot of time for additions to their little circle. Not even for a girl who Cain truly had cared for. He never would say that he hadn't cared for Olivia.
The man that he had been at that point in his life -the man he still very much was- was not the sort that wanted to share his life story. It wasn't a good one really, and he didn't like looking back on the past. Especially when it had been so recent in the time that he and Olivia had been an item. Cain had had so much more happening within his world that he ever let on, and even though part of him knew that you should share those sorts of things with your girlfriend, he'd never been able to bring himself to do just that.
It was simple really, his reasons for keeping so much from her and not wanting to open up for her to know everything. Olivia had been his escape from everything bad that had happened in his world. When he'd been with her, he didn't want to think about his past. Or what was upsetting him. Which was a lot in that time. He didn't want to have serious talks or get into things of a less pleasant variety because...well, in those blue eyes of Cain Costello's he had always thought that she didn't need to be dragged into his darkness. Not everyone could handle what it was that he'd gone through. Not everyone was programmed to be able to take his history and then just shrug it off like it was nothing. Not that it hadn't been nothing, but it wasn't something that the Costello boy ever wanted to deal with.
Cain had understood why it'd put so much strain on their relationship though, and he only hoped, that it wouldn't effect whatever it was that they were venturing into. Because he knew by the way that she looked at him, and the glitter in her eyes, he just knew that she was feeling the same old flame that he was feeling. Maybe even stronger, for, Olivia always had been all kinds of a softy for him. Something he took more pride in than he'd ever let on to anyone. He had been happy to call her his during the time when that was truth. And a large part of him, well, he didn't see much harm in trying again. Even if it was a terrible fucking decision in the words of one Jagger Wilson.
An easy laugh came from the man at her words and a dimpled smile took over those lips of his. "Yeah, well, Jagger pretty much hates the world and it getting frown lines so," he stated and then shrugged slightly. Even if it was far from the truth. If Cain were to have a moment of being honest with himself he would claim that Jagger was aging better than he was, the dumb bastard.
The way that she slipped her hand into his, though, it sent that all too familiar jolt of electricity through his body. Oh yeah, this was so much more than he'd intended for it to be. He found himself not giving much of a damn if it only lasted for the night, or went on to more. He'd missed her, probably more than he'd ever admitted, but he'd missed her. He missed the way that she'd always just fit with him, he'd missed her smile, her scent. Cain wasn't about to go out and say that he loved the girl or anything like that, but, he had indeed missed damn near everything about her. Even her bossy nature.
Once at the bar he finished off his own beer then signaled for another before turning his attention fully to the girl again. "Well, ya know," he stated with a bit of a shrug. "Nothing too eventful. Went to work, got into a pissing match with Jagger because he was trying to tell me what to do with my life, ate some food, then came here. Really nothing out of the ordinary," the man mused and then took another pull off of the bottle. "What about you? Anything exciting happen through your day? Meet any beautiful boy who's stolen your heart?" he spoke, those tones of his turning teasing.

[atrb=width,400] the oncoming storm She never could put her finger on why she could never let the thought of Cain fade into a distant memory of her past, but when Olivia thought about the handsome, dark, rugged man that she was standing with she regretted how angry she had gotten in the past at him for not letting her inside his mind. Maybe that did make her a bad girlfriend back then, because she couldn't let him have his secretes, it was obvious that whatever had happened in her ex boyfriends life, was bad and she shouldn't have pushed him to let her in, but god dammit she wanted to be the person besides Jagger that he could tell his troubles to. She needed that back then, to feel useful in that sense. She should not have been so selfish, and maybe they would still be together as a couple instead of seeing each other for the first time in almost six years. The what if's started to take over her mind as she sipped on her beer smiling at Cain, wanting so bad to lean into him, listen to him talk and drown out the noise that was everywhere inside the bar. "Oh honey" she laughed, "your life is so full of excitement she teased as he told her the overview of his day, Her day had been hectic, all her work days were hectic. Her boss was like the devil during the change of seasons. With the new line for spring fixing to come out Olivia's work load had been thrown into overdrive. "Oh you know" she gave a light laugh taking another sip of her beer before smiling at him, "busy... There's lots of meetings to schedule, sketches to transport from person to person, just lots of busy. Nothing to exciting. She wasn't sure if he really was interested in what she had been up to for the day or not, so she kept it simple unless he were to ask in more detail. That was so much different than the last time they were together, back then it didn't matter if she had stayed home and painted her nails and listened to music all day, he would have heard every little detail she had to share but now it was like she was afraid to tell him to much, show that she was a different person now that she was an adult. The next question he asked took her slightly off guard, with a blush and a small shrug, the young woman set down her beer and looked her handsome ex boyfriend, the boy she had once loved and quite possibly was now falling in love with again this very second, before she spoke with a small smile breaking across her face. "Uhm.." she stuttered and gave a small laughs, "only the one that's doing it right now." it was true and if he couldn't tell, if the man that once knew her every though and feeling with out asking couldn't tell, then there was no hope for them ever in the future.. if that was even what this meeting was about. Things were starting to get interesting, and the night she hoped was going to take a very different turn than she had thought in the beginning that it was going to. |
